Microsoft dose not recognize NON microsoft partition formats

That is the reason xp dose not see the drive - it is using a NON microsoft format
windows not support it.

so unless you reformat some ( about half) and format that to a Microsoft patented format ( NTFS) you can not load xp on to the laptop

how did you reformat it in the first place ?

pop in "Gparted" or "Parted magick"
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
http://partedmagic.com/doku.php
-- for a windows ONLY reinstall
and format the drive to ntfs
install the old ( and soon "end of life" )XP sp3

but i would buy a copy of win7 and use that
