I'm curious about the setup here as well in regards to partitions. If /home is a seperate partition or not could make a difference in how easy this could be to fix in the end.

It would be useful if you remember something about your partitions, specifically if /home is a seperate partition or not. I mean, provided your important info is on /home that is..

AAHhhhh.... SOLVED!

After cursing my wife's Chromebook all day yesterday for not seeing my new memory stick, it turns out that the usb stick cover was not pushed back all the way! Pushing it hard, it clicked open another 1mm and voila! She says I owe her chromebook a big apology.

Then using Chrome, I had to change the .ISO to .BIN in order to have it write the iso to the thumb drive. Did you know that to change a filename in chrome you first have to hold down Alt key then click on the name ?!? I had to DDG search to find that nugget.

Then booting from the thumb drive I was able run fsck /dev/sda1 and it found and fixed all the corrupted files. I'm writing this from back on my old 2010 Vaio :-)

Thanks all for your support, getting me back on the Terminal command line lol, and repairing this. And I didn't loose any of my stuff!!

Excellent, and now you can mark this closed.
We are all glad to see success.

Yay! That's good to hear.

If you don't already, be sure to keep a backup of your important stuff on something like an external HD at home. Just in case.
