Hang on Startup

I am running FC3 on a Dell laptop. Everything was working fine but I decided to edit xorg.conf to put in the correct screen parameters.
When I rebooted the boot hung at

'Enabling File Sytem Quotas' The screen is black and no command that I can think of has any effect.

I really don't want to reload linux so what can I do to rescue this situation.

Thanks for any help

Boot into a rescue CD. There is a rescue CD option on your FC3 install CD which you can use. Mount your FC3 / partition, for example:

mkdir /rescue
mount -t ext3 /dev/hda3 /rescue

Then edit the copy of xorg.conf which is somewhere in /rescue to put it back into a working state.

When you finish, remove the rescue CD and type:
umount /rescue
shutdown -r now

Nothing I tried worked - I had to start from scratch and reload the CDs - very painful.

I had recently upgraded the kernel to 2.6.11.5 and the unpdated the nvidia display driver. I wonder if this created the problem. I have no diagnostics to tell what was going on though.

Thanks for your help - in vain unfortunately
