GRUB Error #17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition

Hi,

I just installed Kubuntu 6.10 alongside my existing installation of Windows XP. I am using GRUB as my bootloader. I can boot into Windows just fine, but when I try to select Kubuntu it gives me the following error:

Quote:
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition.

Press any key to continue...
My hardware is as follows...

AMD Sempron 2600+ (s754) OCed from 1.6GHz to 2.0GHz
Chaintech VNF3-250
PNY GeForce 6600GT
G.SKILL 1GB DDR400
Seagate 80GB SATA HDD, partitioned 70GB for Windows XP and 10GB for Linux
Western Digital 80GB IDE HDD, partition 30+30+20, all partitions are currently empty

I haven't used Linux in a very long time, so I am pretty much clueless here. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
NickN

Does Kubuntu have a rescue option on the instal cd?

Basically, you want to get into your system and check the grub.conf file (or menu.lst which sometimes is a link to grub.conf) and check that the file is set up correctly.

This kind of error occurs for example if the grub.conf refers to a partition label and the label has been changed, so it could help to change the label for the actual partition name (supposing that's the case).

It can also happen when there's a new partition created and so the location of /boot (or / if you have no seperate /boot partition) has been altered.

One other possible way that you can get this error is if the hard drive that you have loaded GRUB to is DOA. Just found this one out after trying to solve the error with software for a few days

Ack, sorry I haven't replied to this thread for so long. I've been so busy with school and work! Anyway, a friend came over the day after I posted this and got it all fixed for me. Works fine now. Thanks anyways for the advice, linmix and Fixed_It.

How was it fixed? That is the important part that will ultimately help others.

Oh, and thanks for posting back that it was fixed.

To be honest I have no idea what he did. I was studying at the time he did it. I'll see if I can ask him exactly what he did the next time I see him.
