In case you had there something very important you should back up this partition with dd utility now.
Otherwise, answer y.
It seems to me the issue you are having is unrelated to your external drive format, unless this disk partitioner is buggy and did something [bad] in its own.

I do have lots of important photos etc. I have nowhere to back it up to so I think I will have to get another hard drive to be able to back up the data first.

I don't really understand though, if I cannot access the drive because it is not mounted, how will I be able to use a disk copying utility to pull the files i.e. how will it have access to the files if I don't? Or is it possible to back up a partition even if it's not mounted?

Low level utilities like fsck and dd work directly with device. We have a great dd thread somewhere here at LQ, search for it.
