Getting Kaffiene (SuSE 9.2) to play DVDs

The version of Kaffiene which came with SuSe 9.2 won't play dvds... so I've tried downloading the latest version of Xine, but when I try the ./configure command it tells me that I don't have the appropriate C compiler, so I started downloading gcc 3.4.3, but once I began trying to ./configure that, it told me that I didn't have a working CC set in my environment settings... I tried (partially to see if I already had it installed) export CC=gcc (crude, I know but I was at a loss as to what I should do) and then I tried it again. The configure program did pick up on this setting however, and said that I had gcc installed, but I think it was just reporting back what I had written, as it said that I still didn't have a cc capable of writing executables.

Will my big download venture even help, or do I need certain codecs or what??? Please help me... Also I get the feeling I'll be needing the gcc compiler anyway so any help on that front would be good... I hear that it's also included in SuSE 9.2, but isn't installed by default...

You'd be better off with precompiled rpm's

Install xine-ui , libxine1. You'll also need libdvdcss (widely available).

Suse ships with players that won't play DVD's to get round the legal restrictions.

You need libdvdcss to play encrypted dvd's, best to go for the rpm, saves a lot of hassle. Here is another link to check out
