Gentoo freezes when emerging

I just installed Gentoo and I'm trying to either emerge sync or emerge KDE. Every time I emerge, after about 5 minutes my screensaver kicks in. Then the computer locks up on me because I can't get the screen back. It's just black! Plus the number and scroll lock light flash on and off. What's the heck did I do to my box? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

post your question on http://www.gentoo.org their forums are much better for gentoo support. They are the reason gentoo users are sparse on here, those forums are much better. :-D Good luck.
