GCC compiler options???!!

Hello guys!
1) I tried to compile a openGL programm that uses glut!!
The -L option, what it does?? It it like linkinh a .LIB file in VC++??
The parameter after -L is it the library name? How to use that

eg: "-Lglut" does this mean to link the glut library!! or do we have to use the hole file name like "-Lglut.so" .

2) I downloaded Mesa3D library and installed it!? Do I have to install Glut seperalty to run Mesa3D examples???

3) Actually what it GLUT is it like utility to handle windows .I heard to GTK .. is it similar to GLUT??

Thanks
