Cool garbagy screen, says "PC Display settings correct?"

HOLY DEAR GOD!!

ok, so im a windows person, but i have been using a computer since i was about 8 or so.. started with the commodore 128, then dos, win 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98..... whatever they're all the same crappy os's (windows i mean)

So i got a copy of Mandrake 7.2 and installed it on a compaq presario 7947. its basically a crap pc, like my presario 5000 series.. only diff. is the 7000 series has a much bigger case and is more upgradeable.

the 7947 im running linux on has a AMD Athlon 600, 64 ram, ati all-in-wonder 128 32mb agp card, 30gb western digital, firewire.. thats all the important stuff.

Basically i switched the resolution from 640x480 -> 800x600, and the screen wants to turn off now, so for me to see anything i have to turn the screeen off and on again, and even THEN it only lasts about 5 seconds and i have to turn it off and on again!!
UGH its frustrating.
overall though i am impressed with the setup.. seems pretty stable except for the video stuff.

thx for any help

What XFree86 version do you use? I would recommend version 4.0.3 or the new 4.1.0 to get optimal video performance.

Here is an overview of the drivers you should use based on X-version:

It sounds to me like you are overloading your monitor. Although rare, it is possible to fry your monitor by choosing the wrong settings. Make sure you are choosing te correct video card and monitor settings when you are setting up X.
