hello i have suse at school
im a limited user and i cant run gaim properly
the following will describe difficulties i encountered
while trying to log on.
first the net doesnt work here and i go to sysadmins
and they tell me to write in console
export http_proxy=http://192.168.0.1:3128
then they tell me that if that does not work i can
try to set this proxy manually for firefox for example.
it worked for firefox.
im trying to run gaim also
i found gaim was already installed.
stefan.petrea@c402a5:~> gaim
i configure my account
i try to login...i wait considerable amount of time nothing
happens i close gaim
i open gaim again i go to preferences network manual proxy setting
i configure host with the ip provided above and port too
i try to logon again
i get this error:
Acces Denied: proxy server forbids acces port 5190
so i go again to preferences network proxy manual setting and i change
the port from 3128 to 5190 and i get Could not conect to host.
i must mention that i cannot do any of these commands:
ifconfig,ipconfig,iptables,ipchains.
proxymngr altough works but i dont knwo how to use it or what it
is.
pleae help me redirect traffic to ports that are good for using.
help me...i need to talk to my friends.

also i cannot do any pings from console altough firefox works perfectly.
i am using open suse 9.3

That's probably because your network doesn't allow traffic for port 5190 (read firewalling).

Changing ports that way won't work again firewalling and IP protocols.

Sure, you can't...you probably don't control the network

Edit:
pings (outgoing or incoming) may be blocked but firefox works because it uses http...and http protocol would be exclusively allowed through firewall.

As far as I can tell, you have little choice my friend. It all depends on your network and how it is setup. If your school doesn't want you to use gaim and you are using their network, you have very little choice. May be someone more experienced can give you some tips but I doubt.
