I wanted to build a Linux OS from scratch so I came across a site that suggested using a Ubuntu live cd or usb. So I created a live USB with Ubuntu. I downloaded the packages that LFS told me to and the patches. So far I have followed pretty well until I downloaded the packages the only way I had to download the packages was archive manager on Ubuntu. You are going to think I am slow but I do not know where the packages went to if they are stored on my in computer hard drive or my USB Drive. And if they are on my usb drive how am I going to get the packages from the USB to my hard drive so I can continue on with this project.

You really should have posted the steps you are trying to follow to allow people to try and figure out where you are in the process.

I'm not very familiar with Ubunto, but from what I understand a Live USB with Ubunto is the working distro. You have to make sure that your computer can boot from a USB device (normally found in BIOS). Then all you have to do is have the USB inserted and if the computer detects the OS it should boot and start running Ubunto from the USB.

As far as finding what you downloaded, I have 2 suggestions.

1) try downloading it again and notice where the computer will put it. Pay attention to the file name because if it exists it should rename what you are about to download with a number after it or ask to replace it (if you're using win to download). If the file exists you can cancel the download and get the original.

2) search for it. Just make sure the USB drive you want to use is part of the search path.

I am not sure I follow here? The archive manager I am thinking of is used to extract files and looking through it's options I see no way to enable it to download
from the internet.

Would you please clarify further so we may help you?

Did you perhaps mean extracting and not downloading? If extracting, the manager will choose where the file is located to extract it.
