When you installed, your installation should have added the pcmcia extentions to the kernel. In most installs (i haven't installed RH9, so I can't be dead certain), will say something to the effect of "if you don't need pcmcia, would you like me to remove it now?" This is usually the highlighted option, as only laptops usually need it. If you hit enter thinking that the selection was appropriate to your laptop, or read it wrong, you might have removed them by accident. An alternative explaination is that your boot floppies might carry the actual kernel (most just include lilo/grub, which point to your Linux partition), and you need a disk with the pcmcia's to suppliment the kernel as it boots.
