Files and their signatures

What are those signature files which one must download in 'parallel' with the actual file? How can they be used to check the the file is really reliable? How can i make my own file signature?

thanks... ganninu.

md5 sums give you a way to check if your download is corrupted. To play with them, use md5sum. Type md5sum --help to list its options.
