File Server

I want to make o program using perl.
A linux server will be used as file server.
Every user is going to has his own documents ~/

Is it better to use ftp in order to transport the documents to/from the file
sever or Samba?

What do you suggest?

depends what you're actually doing... you say you want to0 write a perl program, but this bares no relation to wether nfs is better than samba.... obviously you want it to be controlled by a perl script somehow... but it's pretty unrelated going by what you've said.... what about client platforms etc?

clients will have to store documents (docs, images) to their archives.
Authentication is nessecary.
Perl is going to do the whole job (create directory acording the docs name, sorting...., transferring data from/to server in general)

Is it a good idea to store the docs (doc, gif) into the mysql server as BLOB or not?
