Fedora 10 install-no root user found/offered; and no Device-Modem search

I have just installed a live disk of Fedora 10 on my Compaq 2.4 GHZ EVO. The disk was an Internet purchase. I got very little complication while loading the OS but it was certainly different than other Linux OS's I've installed as there was no root user option. The problem that I am having is in 2 pieces and the first is that I am not able to find my modem or the Device tool to find the modem as listed in some Fedora Modem Setup info. I went to Network Admin and tried to setup the modem but it was never found. The OS knew it was there as I saw it at the opening notes. I think the reason I cannot find the modem is that there is no root user. This is the second problem. I have only one user and that is me. I can go to various functions and will be quizzed for the root password but there is no root user as there is me, the personal user. I think that because I cannot get into a root user, as it is not installed I cannot get to Device to setup the modem but how was the root user to be set up as I did not get that option. It is not there. I think either there is a simple answer to this question or the disk and OS are corrupt. I could use some help.
Thanks,
Kent L

You can recover from a lost root password following the instructions at this page:

Root is disabled for GDM (Gnome Display Manager) logins by default in FC10.

You can fix this in a few ways:

1) You can re-enable the root account for GDM logins by editing /etc/pam.d/gdm and removing the line with !root
2) Install another display manager, like KDM
3) Switch to another VT once logged in with your normal user by hitting <ctrl-alt-f2>
Log in as root
Start a new X session: startx -- :1
You can switch back to your original session by hitting <alt-F7> or <ctrl-alt-f7>
*Note, I've only tested this in Ubuntu, but it should still work since it bypasses the GDM*

Thanks for the good advice as all of the things you mentioned worked to some degree. I think I have realized however that since my install is from a live CD there are allot of things that are just not there and esp configuring a modem and properly communication with root. I get to root but the system just does not respond to any alterations and is somewhat disabled so I have ordered a regular Install DVD that should clear up all of the problems. It was my mistake to not realize that a live CD was not fully equipped.
I appreciate it
