Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module

I read everything I could, and still can't find an answer to my problem:

Running SuSE 8.2 Pro and using a GeForce FX5200 card, I downloaded and installed the driver 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2' just fine. After editing the XF86Config file correctly, I type "startx" and get the following error in my .log file:

"Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module"

Nothing in the README file will help. There were no warnings or notes during the installation if a precompiled kernel interface was used or if it had to compile one from scratch. Do I need to install a kernel-source package for my kernel, and if so how? The README file completely assumes that you know how to compile a kernel module yourself.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I'm using Debian, but the NVIDIA drivers. Once u have installed the drivers, u have to make sure that driver modules are loaded. If u do lsmod it'll show the list of modules loaded and NVdriver should be in that list.

Then on XF86 Config make sure u use that module. Hope this help

Like stunned said, you'll have to give us more info. But some common reasons for failure are:

* You didn't have your kernel header files installed. This will cause an error during installation so you've probably got them since you say you've installed it.

* The GLcore module isn't being loaded (in XF86Config-4) and the glx and dri modules aren't commented out. The GLcore module is needed but the glx and dri modules conflict with the nvidia module.

* The nvidia kernel module is not loaded. Type lsmod as root and make sure there is a line in the output that says "nvidia". If it's not loaded type modprobe nvidia and try starting X again. If you get errors on the modprobe bit then that is your problem (post errors here). Most likely cause of this is the module wasn't compiled properly.

For more help you'll need to post some more info like error messages, the output of lsmod, and the output of lspci -v.

I type lsmod and realized the nvidia module isn't loaded. I then type 'modprobe nvidia', and get the following:

Warning: loading .....nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
see (blah blah .com) for more info
Module loaded, with warnings

I check lsmod again, and now the module is loaded. Don't think I should worry about the warning. After doing startx, I got a blank screen and had to do a force reboot. I checked the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file, and there are now no error rows (EE). Guess I need to reconfigure my XF86Config file. I tried it two ways already: with loaded module "glx" and removed "dri" and "GLcore" as suggested in the README file, and removing "glx" and loading "Glcore", but then I get the following error in the .log file:

(EE) Failed to load module "Glcore" (module does not exist, 0)

Here's my XF86Config file, if that helps:

try to comment the last 4 lines in you config file - place "#" (no quotes) at the front of each of those lines. for you it shouldn't matter though as you're not loading dri, but you never know. also in the block starting with ' Section "Device" ', change nv to nvidia in the Driver line.

Nope, commenting out those lines didn't help - still get a blank screen. I'll post my /var/log/XFree86.0.log file later today.

yeah, you need to change your driver from 'nv' to 'nvidia', 'nv' is the open source driver that works well with 2-D, very little support for 3-D.

also i don't think you need the glcore one, glx should be fine.

Again, I did change my driver module from 'nv' to 'nvidia' in the XF86Config file. When I do that, I still get a blank screen.

DO you have a XF86Config-4 file? If you do then that's the one to use. Secondly, see if you can get a copy of knoppix. More than once I've used it to get my graphics settings right.

No. There is no XF86Config-4 file on my system. I'd rather not switch to a complete new distro either. This is Linux...there has to be a way around this.

Here's a copy of my XFree86.0.log file, when I have 'nvidia' loaded into my XF86Config file, and I get the blank screen:

Any suggestions? At all? Even a little bit?

Idea.

Look at the last line from above:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768"

In my monitor manual, I need a resolution of 1280x1024. Guess I need to edit the XF86Config file to get the correct resolution. Correct? If so where would I edit it?

You add it to the section below. It's already there. If you like, you can take out the ones you don't want. The way it works is that the X server implements the first resolution it can handle. So it would seem it can't handle that res. Try changing the res to something lower and mess around with the default colour depth. The only other thing I can think of is to get yourself a copy of knoppix. It's autodetection is second to none. I've never had it not-boot on any of my systems. I then just rip off the XF86Config file from that and it usually works.

Quote:
Section "Screen"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

this worked for me

I received the same error message you received when I was trying to get the nvidia driver to work on a 2.6 kernel. My fix for this was to add the line "/sbin/modprobe nvidia" to the file /etc/rc.local and reboot. For reference here is my /etc/rc.local file on a RH9 system:

#!/bin/sh
#
# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
/sbin/modprobe nvidia
