Failed attempt to install Mint 17.3 on x220 need help.

I just purchased a refurbished x220 to use as my mobile machine.
As this was my first attempt to install on a UEFI machine I searched
the net for instructions on how to do this.

I burned the image to a usb and went into the bios and set it up to boot from usb. All went well and I made sure everything worked and then went to install. During install I was asked to create a efi partition which I did. The rest of the install seemed to go well, and after I finished and rebooted the system it defaults to a intel boot agent thats says there is a media failure. From there it goes to a boot menu that has 2 entries, my hdd and a pci lan boot. when I select my hdd the screen goes black for 5-10secs and then returns to the boot menu. I have tried to get the machine to boot from usb and i have tried switching from legacy and uefi boot with no different results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey!

As it happens, I had a similar problems yesterday(switched to mint 17.3).
I just reinstalled, without the LVM option I think, and the second time it just started up perfectly fine.

Give that a shot?

Mint is pretty good at "just working" on UEFI installs.
Unfortunately the UEFI standard ain't - it ain't Unified, and it sure as hell isn't standard across different manufacturers. So you may be on your own for a lot of it.
When you install, do you get two entries for the (same) USB to choose from ?. If so, make sure you choose the UEFI one.
How did you burn the USB ?. I find using dd the best - it's a hybrid ISO.
When you boot the USB, from a terminal run "sudo efibootmgr" (install it in need) and post the output.

Thanks

Thanks to you both for your advise. I using the x220 right now running mint. I do not know what caused it. But I will share what I did to get it up and running. I reformatted both the hdd and the usb and rewrote the usb. After that the machine booted off the usb and the install went fine. I installed as uefi and I now have a working x220. The other thing I did different is I was not connected to the net.(my wifi has been iffy at best lately so I left it unconnected from the net). Thanks again to both of you.
