Arrow External dialup modem

I have installed Mandrake 10.1 Ok but my external "generic" modem is not recognised. I tried manually but the modem (OK on WinXP) lights do not flash at all - also seems like the com port not installed?? How do I check com ports 1 & 2 and isolate problems - May be not compatable?

Thanks,

Modem is plugged to which port USB or Serial Port. If it's connected to USB then you have load necessary USB modules. If serial then use minicom and try to connect use /dev/ttys1 or ttys2 for com1 com2 respectively.

It is an external modem connecting to com1 or com2 - How do I check if the com ports were recognised by Linux during install? I cannot see any in the sytem configuration?

I have had the best luck with my 2 external modems setting them up using kppp. It is the easiest to configure and use that I have found so far. Both my modems are recognized on ttys0 under FC3 and Debian. It was the same for Mandrake also.
