Exiting man pages in terminal

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the help so far, I've installed Vector Linux and configured it, etc. And, I have been learning to use bash for a little while, now. However, one nagging problem that I've had is my inability to exit "man" pages in the terminal. What happens is this, I'll be unsure about the syntax of a command so I'll type :

man whoami // this one I am sure of

Then, the description of the command with all the add-ons (?) will be displayed. This has been very helpful, but I can't exit the man page afterwards within the terminal (I have to close it from within an X-Window environment) I also read that exiting a terminal this way can be damaging to the system (I'm not logged on as root, though).

I've tried searching google for answers, but something so simple is (not suprisingly) ignored. I've only found descriptions of what the command man is used for...

So, what keyboard shortcut will exit the display?
