I'm using evolution for my e-mail, and I'd like to turn on the spell check feature. I'd even like to get it so that it shows me when I'm misspelling a word as I type, the way that mozilla does, but I can't figure out what to do or install. Does anyone know about this subject? I'm using debian etch.
Look in Preferences -> Composer Preferences -> Spell Checking (Tab) -> Check spelling while I type (box).
By the way, I found this in the Help Manual. You may need to install a dictionary. I don't know if it automatically installs a default based on your locale setting.
I was using Thunderbird as my client. As a test, I started "Evolution" and started to compose a message with intentional typos. I wasn't getting spell checking. I found that I needed to go to "Edit -> Current Languages" and select English. After that, the spell checking worked.

I looked there and I already have that spell checking box selected. I notice, though, when I'm looking at this tab that I have no language installed. How do I remedy that? Does evolution have a site where I can download a dictionary or language? I cannot find a debian package for this.

What version are you using? I'm using 2.6.3. I cannot find "Edit -> Current Languages". I found "Edit -> Character Encoding" on the "Compose Message" screen, but I left it at UTF-8.
I resolved the problem. I found out I was missing some other packages outside of evolution. I was missing 'aspell', 'gnome-spell', 'aspell-en' and the libraries associated with those packages. I don't know why they weren't installed when I installed gnome, but they weren't.
