Error with boot floppy

I run RH9, and I am trying to create a boot floppy by copying the /boot/vmlinuz file to the floppy. I correctly set the root device with rdev, but I get the following error message when I try to boot with it:

Uncompressing Linux......
Invalid compressed format (err=1)
--System Halted

Does anybody know what's causing this? I know how to make a boot floppy with the mkboot command, but I would like to be able to do it this way as well.
