error in kernel 2.4.5

hi...

i was installing a kernel 2.4.5 and when i type the command

make bzImage

i get this error msg...

make *** : [vmlinux] error1

can any one help here, the system is mandrake 8.1....

You have done the two minimal steps before it, right:

make menuconfig (or xconfig or if you're hardcore, config)
make dep

you are aware that your current kernel is newer than that one that you're trying to build?
