Just want to say...been a Win user for years, but finally got the Linux bug, so I started with Puppy on an old PC (10 years or more? Had Win ME on it!) and now, because I don't have a CDR, just a regular CD drive and a floppy drive, I could only find an old Red Hat 8 book at the library WITH CDs (instead of DVDs!), so tonight I will go install it on a partition.
The main reason I am adding a 2nd OS is...Puppy is giving me a bit of trouble with writing C++ (something else I am NEW at!) and so I thought I would get an older Linux OS to practice my C++ code examples.
My BIG question is, anyone know of an online tutorial or help files either in HTML pages or PDF that I can download to help me UNDERSTAND the errors I am getting? after I ran the terminal to execute my 4th or 5th exe, it kicked out a bunch of error messages I can't decipher!
Thanks in advance, and I really appreciate all the assistance I have received so far at various Linux sites!
RH 8 is waaay out of date & thus open to exploits, will possibly not cope with modern HW.
Try RH Fedora 10, or CENTOS 5.3 (free version of Red Hat Enteprise Linux 5.3).
The ONLY reason I am going with the RedHat (looks like version 7 now, the 1st CD for ver 8 won't load ) is...
I am using the distros out of books from the local library, there ARE no ver 9 or 10, etc. so I went with what was available. Although on second thought, I may just wait and look around on craigslist or something, see if I can get a copy from someone there...
and you can even get a dvd or "live" cd mailed to you in the ground post . if there is a "best buy" store ( or from the net)near by i think they have ubuntu install disks for $20
and RH 8 is SO old that there are only a hand full of people here that have used it
" 7 (Guinness), September 25, 2000 (this release is labeled "7" not "7.0") (Linux 2.2.16-22) "
" 8.0 (Psyche), September 30, 2002 (Linux 2.4.18-14)"
Red Hat 9 is also unsupported
Even Red Hat' Fedora distribution up until version 7 or 8 are available on multiple CD's. For newer installs you could just as well try a network or ftp install. There are certainly several tutorials on the net for that.

Comment:
Do you mean your pc /hardware is very old?
There are chances you'd have trouble installing new linux versions on an old pc. What are your hardware specs?
I bet you won't be able to run new versions in an old spec. However, for an old pc you may try Absolute Linux, this distro is aimed at older hardware environment. You can download this at http://www.absolutelinux.org/download.shtml
