Question dual booting with a external HD

I have windows XP on the internal IDE drive with Ubuntu on a separate partiton, and Fedora 8 installed on a external eSATA/USB hard drive. I had to repair my XP MBR so now the grub is gone. What way is easy to put grub back, but onto only the external drive for Fedora, and then copy/ paste to add any other Linux distros in the menu.lst file ? Is there a master boot record for all drive which are partitioned and formatted, even with-out any Windows installed ? I could just reinstall or update Fedora with the DVD, and then put grub onto the root partition ? thanks

I think what you are asking is can grub be in its own partition? Yes it can but there is a little work involved, it is called chainloading. See if this is what you are talking about.
