Do I need Ubuntu Studio?

Hi there.

I am thinking of having a go with recording some audio with a DAW (specifically Ardour).

I have read some articles that suggest that Ubuntu Studio might be a good idea as it uses a specialised Kernel that can help decrease latency when recording.

If I go with Ubuntu Studio over something like Mint, will the kernel make my computer worse for general desktop purposes like internet browsing etc?

I wouldn't think so. When building a kernel, the menuconfig is basically a large checklist of features and drivers: I reckon the kernel for ubuntu studio has checked more drivers for more sound cards, and perhaps decreased powersaving features and increased performance features. It may be that the studio kernel might drain a laptop's battery more quickly. The best way to tell is to compare mint's kernel config with ubuntu's studio kernel config, using a program like "diff" to discover what the actual differences are.
