disconnecting and reconnecting broadband without restarting

Dear knowledgable folk;

Fedora Core 3:
Plug in broadband; Startup; no problem.
Startup; Plug in broadband; problem.
Is there any way of connecting to the internet without restarting with the cable connected?

Secondly, clicking on some things forces Mozilla to close (for example the button "check for similar threads") - any ideas?

You probably just need to run:
Code:
ifup eth0
as root after plugging in your cable. There is also a package called laptop-net that I use in Debian: http://packages.debian.org/testing/admin/laptop-net It automatically starts and stops the network when the cable is removed and reinserted. It may be available in Fedora also.

I could be wrong, but:

Most (I think) ISPs provide you with a dynamic ip address - one that is subject to being changed.

If your machine is set to get its IP address by DHCP, then I think that the machine will have already tried to get an address, failed, and given up during the boot.

erm.. I think that that is correct; no doubt I will be corrected by someone with more knowledge if this is not the case.

as for mozilla closing, sorry... I have no idea
