Dialup connection sometimes cannot resolve host

I'm running Fedora Core 1 with an external Creative Labs Modem Blaster. My modem always dials and connects to my ISP, but a lot of times when I open up firefox it just sits there "resolving host xxxxxx.com....." then times out. I have to hang up and reconnect a few times and it eventually works, usually on the 3rd or 4th reconnect.

Someone here at LinuxQuestions told me about the resolv.conf file and I have this correct, yet the problem keeps happening. I actually have 3 resolv.conf files:

/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/ppp/resolv.conf
/etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/resolv.conf

All 3 files are identical and contain the correct IP addresses for Earthlink DNS.

I had a cheapo local ISP for $6.00/month and I thought the problem was with the ISP. I now signed up with Earthlink and the exact same thing is happening. Firefox sits there saying "resolving host...." then times out, and no Internet apps work (evolution or pan). But when I hang up and redial it works on the 3rd or 4th reconnect.

What am I missing here?

The ISP's I have dealt with have always provided 2 DNS #'s (placed in /etc/resolv.conf as nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. My KPPP is setup with DNS to resolve auto. Have you tried auto?
