Desktop questions and Gnome (ciro-dock)

Hi all,

In my experimenting with desktops and distros, I came across Gnome. Currently running Ubuntu 18-latest but I'm not sure I like the side taskbar so I opted to follow a tutorial and removed it.

I am starting a list of commands in a notebook so I can learn and have a quick ref to my fav settings.

# first question does anyone know how to get the sidebar back? - I followed a way to hide the sidebar and intergrate it into one taskbar at the top.

# next question is would gnome be a better option for me? Is Gnome just a shell or is a complete OS? Im really confused as I find people saying its a shell and its unity. I don't know to stick with Ubuntu or try Gnome as I love a simple desktop like apple OSX

Im also using ciro-dock though I am currently having issues getting all the fancy stuff to work on the dock, when I go into the settings it doesn't allow me to add any effects sadly my dock isn't working like others.

Thanks again
Chels

there is a dash to dock that worked better for me with new ubuntu.gnome. tried a couple of other docks and they were limited or else had an issue. it was a while ago so i do not remember and i do not have it running on the 3 laptops either so i cannot check for you i am sorry to say. dash to dock is in the app store area. that also had many problems and many times have to reload it to get it to work and i am not the only one that said that either.

it did not have fancy stuff and the one element did not work but it was stable in my month or so of use. hope this helps.

Do you mean Cairo Dock? If so, you might want to change the thread title.

I'm running Cairo Dock on Mint 19 as a software-selection hideaway dock at the top of my screen (as well as using MATE's normal panel at the bottom of my screen). If I can help you with the configuration, I will, but I'll need more info on what configuration option(s) you're having problems with (just pick one which doesn't work and we'll concentrate on that to start).

Gnome is a desktop environment. Please see this thread for some info on this and similar concepts: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ro-4175623119/

Ubuntu used to use Unity, another desktop environment, but no longer does.

There are other desktop environments such as KDE, Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, etc. You can try these out as live boot disks to see if you like them. I personally use Linux Mint 19 MATE.

Sorry I could't find how to edit a thread, it would be easier if the forum had a search tool bar at the top. Also I need to state that I have dyslexia so I may spell things wrong now and again. Typing university essays is a nightmare though I use spell and grammar checks and I also spend days weeks writing them.

I'm conceding staying with Linux Ubuntu and just tweaking the Gnome desktop as I then could migrate everything in the top bar and disable the side bar, this cleaned the desktop up.

Cairo Dock looks nice though it may be due to my machine it runs strangely (the little 11" acer is pretty hopeless). There are still lots of features I would like on Cairo Dock like a start menu and log out and shut down bars that would be fantastic to make the desktop very user friendly.

Before I purchase my new machine I want to make sure I am 100% sure the operating system so I can clean install set up and use it without lots of features and programs clogging up the hard drive. *insert Sade Smooth Operator
