Deleting junk

I know this is probably in every Linux manual and HOWTO, but I need to know some commands. This command:

How do I delete files I need to vaporize? I know all rules as far as what to delete applies to Linux--never whack something used by Linux or another module, but I have some text files I've made and copied around, but now I need to remove them to get them out of the way.
