CUI Consoles not available!

Hi
I am runing Fedora core 4 on a compaq EVO machine.
I can login to system using GUI on F7. but CUI console from F1--F6
are not available. when i go to one console it shows blank screen
without any login prompt.
/etc/inittab contains
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6

and ps aux |grep tty says
root 3151 0.0 0.1 1556 364 tty1 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty1
root 3152 0.0 0.1 1556 364 tty2 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty2
root 3153 0.0 0.1 1556 364 tty3 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty3
root 3154 0.0 0.1 1556 364 tty4 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty4
root 3155 0.0 0.1 1556 392 tty5 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty5
root 3156 0.0 0.1 1552 392 tty6 Ss+ 19:34 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty6

It is same in runlevel 3 also.
however i am able to login through cui console in run level 1.

Thanks
Ashish Tyagi
