Crossover cables?

Hi all,
I have my main computer, and a secondary computer mainly used for media storage. I wouldn't mind accessing the second computer from the main one, so I am looking into the cheapest solution (crossover cables). How exactly do these work with Linux (or even Windows)? Do I need one computer to act as a server, how do I ssh between them, etc. Thanks for any help.

They work just like any other network connection. Just make sure the network addresses are compatible (same subnet, mask, etc) and you should be able to communicate between them with no problems.

As for servers, it is the same as any other network connection. If you want to ssh from Comp A into Comp B, for example, A needs to have SSH client and B needs to have an ssh server running.

Newer ethernet cards (and all GBit Enet cards, I believe) autosense so you may not even need to get the special crossover cable.

define media? if its just music gnump3d will serve most music files and allow you to stream them. I used it for a bit and is good.
OR you could mount the directory(s) using NFS.
