Creating RAID array with mdadm question

Hi all,

Question for all, whats the difference between creating an array with mdadm using the partition (/dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1, etc...) and the non-partition (/dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, etc....) What are the benefits? performance boost?

Thanks,

Start at the Linux RAID wiki here.
Select the RAID setup link, and then the article on partition/disk. All there by the people that know.

The partition table is the most basic / common / widely understood method of declaring that the disk is in use, and for what (partition size and type). If you don't use a partition table, and then run some kind of OS installer, or partitioning program, they will probably display the disk as being empty because such programs do not recognize mdadm headers. So without partitions you have a higher risk of accidently overwriting your data.
