cound not open default font 'fixed'...HELP!


hi, my system won't start, i think there is an xserver prob, it says cound not open default font 'fixed' and could not init path element unix/:7100

i am a newbie, and am very confused it was fine one minute but now its not!

any help (please be explicit would be great

p.s. i am using redhat 9

oh and running x configerator doesnt help

I had the same problem. Seems random apps will break X. Well it was probably some font config tool I ran as root while having my other install mounted, but still
In the end I wiped the install, didnt try just switching/forcing the XFree86 out and in. That should work though, but back up your files

i really don't want wipe the install, is there another way?

Yes, try forcing just the X packages to be uninstalled and then reinstalled from cd. Do this from runlevel3. Then maybe reconfigure X. But again, make backups.
I couldnt find an actual solution apart from reinstalling, I think the working configuration has already been lost
