could not startx


My box is science linux 6.1 x86.

At booting, it stops at starting kde.

Any helpful comment would be appreciated.

Looks like you're trying to start as root. Does it work when you use startx as a regular user?

And did it work before? Did you make any recent changes that might possibly account for this?

Try using xwmconfig to change to another desktop environment (if you have any others installed). Does that work?

What happens if you try it as a regular user?

No, I didn't. I usually start KDE as a root.

I added checking file system commands at "/etc/rc.local".

this is usually very much advised against in most Linux distributions. Is there any reason you need to run in root rather than as a user?

I would suggest editing that file and commenting out the changes you made (just add a # at the beginning of each relevant line, don't have to delete them)
Code:
nano /etc/rc.local
and see if it lets you start after that.

When I start linux, I logged in as a root.
