I am having a real problem getting through this issue. I'm very new to Linux and Apache but learning FAST. My application runs on an AWS Linux box, written in php, data from mysql and I need to be able to print order forms on legal size paper. Printing directly from the browser is ugly. I also need to be able to email the forms. It seems like using PDF is the way to go. All of the tools I have encountered are command line and need a url to work. My web pages are created in php and then they are gone.

Can I print to a 'virtual printer' creating a pdf file? If so, I would appreciate a point in the right direction.

Yes. For this I use cups-pdf http://www.cups-pdf.de/
Your Linux distribution may already include this.
