Console display problem

I'm running fedora core 2.My problem is that in the virtual consoles(the one you get by pressing ctrl-alt-fn(1-6), I can't view the names of the files on the system.Folder names are displayed, but file names don't show up on the screen.I think the problem could be that the filenames are diaplyed in black and hence, merge with the background. Is there a way to correct this? Please advise.
