Comparing 2 Directories

The goal of the assignment is to write a script to find the differences between a base and a modified directory.

For instance if dir1 has a file named foo-6_21_08 and dir2 has a file named foo-6_25_08 then the output needs to be

foo MODIFIED.

I'm not really sure where to even begin with this assignment. I'm just starting to learn how to program within the shell. A few tips on where to start would be great.

I wasn't sure if that would screw with the end goal of the assignment. The assignment has to do with comparing two parts of a file name to determine if it was modified or if it's new.
