CLI wireless connection

I can't get nmcli to work from just my command line (no logging in to X for this guy). I'm sure as a rookie I'm overlooking something. Does anyone have suggestions on how to accomplish this.

I have previously connected to my home network within X using network manager

Failure:

Code:
nmcli con up id 'my network'
Active connection state: unknown
Active connection path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/3
Error: Timeout 90 sec expired
P.S. yes, I've tried running as root

good luck. I've never gotten it to work. If I ever need to use wireless from CLI I always ditch Network Manager and go to wicd with wicd-curses. Best cli connection manager IMO.

Yeah, I thought it might come to that. I just dumped all of wicd's stuff because of some other issues *sigh*.
