changing machine name

kinda new to this and checking out redhat 8 using gnome desktop. I'm trying to accomplish 2 things-change the machine name, and get by the MS ISA Server. I have full access to the ISA server and control over the MS/Cisco side of the world. any help would rock.

To change your machine name use
hostname newname
If you think about the name your machine is visible in Windows network, you need to look into smb.conf (/etc/smb.conf, /etc/samba/smb.conf, it can have different locations) or you may look into LinNeighborhood, it may have an option to change the machine name, but I'm not sure.

I tried that and it still prompts for root@machine name root
thanks for the suggestion is there something I'm missing (other than a clue)

Try it again. Then ctrl+alt+f3 (or any other free console) and log in. There should be your new hostname used.

thanks to mara for the advice. when gnome starts it looks in the ect/sysconfig/network file for a machine name.
I changed that and it seems to work.
