CDROM problems

I installed RH 7.2 on my work computer. PII 200 MHZ 32 MB etc.

I installed from the CD rom and made a boot disk to boot. However, when I am in REDHAT I can't use the CD-ROM. It works perfectly fine in Windows, but when I try to mount /mnt/cdrom I get /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device.

Also, I tried to install slackware over Redhat but couldn't get the cdrom to work. It would boot from the cdrom but then I would get a message something like

sys-linux: cannot access cdrom

that is probably not exactly what was displayed, but it is close. Help please.

Thank you in advance.

Try as root
depmod -a

Thank you for your help. That solved my problem. I did a man on depmod, but it was a little steep for me. Thank you anyway for your help. I will have to look a little harder at the man pages when I have some time.
