Problems with enlarging the Cache

Hallo,

I'm like 100% new to Linux. I just try to help a friend who got a EEE 4G Netbook with Linux. (should be Xandros / thats what Wikipedia says)

I want to get him Wine, so he can use some Windows programs. I used Wine 10 years ago when i had a pc using debian. I only worked with 5-6 Commands and already forgot about all of them. I googled alot the past days, but only ran into new problems. So hear is my Problems that occured.

I started with adding new sources to be able to get wine downloaded. I cant find the page i looked it up. Here they are:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main non-free contrib

deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-us/ stable/non-US main contrib non-free

Back to my progress. after adding the sources i updated : apt-get update. It worked out well. So far everything was good.

Now i wanted to install Wine. apt-get install wine.

E: It went to like 92% and afterwards said:
dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: An error occured while loading from xnbd-client (New Package)
E: problem with mergelist /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_packages
E: The Paketlist or the status file cant be parsed or opened.

Again i googled this problem and got to the point of setting the cache onto a higher level.
I then used:
sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.d
and
sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.d/70debconf
to change the cachelimit.
I afterwards tried:
sudo nano /etc/apt/apt-conf.d/11cachelimit.

I typed in apt::Cache-limit "32768000"

So far so good. but every time i tried to safe it, it said: file or directory not found.

And thats where I am right now beeing really pissed and tired of typing in all those commands not even knowing what they really mean.

I hope my english was ok i translated the errors and stuff from german. (I'm from germany) Pls be patient with me. I'm really a newbie.

I hope you can help me with my problem. Also do I hope, that the formating wont be too bad. this is my first post on this forum.

I already want to thank you for reading my text and trying to help me with my problem.

If you need further information on the system or anything else, feel free to ask me. I will try my best to get you the informations you need.

Unhappy Cant install programs on Xandros running into several Errors

Hello,

Im totally new to Linux. I just try to help a friend to get Wine running on his EEE4G Netbook. (should be Xandros installed on it)

I got a few Problems.

1. After adding sources and upadting I tried to install wine. At 92% this error occured:
E: Dynamic MMAP ran out of room
E: An error occured working on xnbd-client (New Package)
E: Problem with mergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_packages
E: The Paketlist or status file could not be parst or opened

I googled and found out that getting a higher cache limit should do the work.

Problem 2:
I get into sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/70debconf add
apt::cache-limit "32768000" saved and it said file or direction could not be found. so i cant safe that.

Thats where I am right now, beeing pissed of typing all those commands i dont even know the meaning of and getting nothing out of it.

I translated everything from german. I hope its right. (Im from Germany)

I already want to thank you for reading my text/helping me.

If you need more infos just write me a message and ill try to get you everything you need.

If this post will be shown twice i already want to appologies. When i wrote the first one it took me a while and got looged of. When relogging the post didnt show up at the forum so i rewrote it.

Welcome!

Unfortunately I don't think Xandros is being maintained any more. You'll probably want to do a fresh reinstall of a supported operating system.

snowpine is right on that, Xandros is years out of date and totally unsupported. So at first you will need to install a supported OS, for a machine like the EeePC 4G (512MB of RAM by default, 4GB disk space) I would recommend antiX, a distribution aimed at those low-spec machines and compatible to Debian.
