Cant connect to mysql

I have recently reinstalled MySQL, this time without helpt from apt-get, since it didn't work so great.

I Installed PHPMyAdmin to, to make it more easy managing databases.

But when i launch phpmyadmin i get this error:

Error

MySQL said:
#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111)

Here are some more info that maybe can help you:

-------------------------------------

/usr/local/mysql/sql-bench# perl run-all-tests
Got error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111)' when connecting to DBI:mysql:database=test;host=localhost with user: '' password: ''

-------------------------------------

Their he says he use the socket /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock, but if I,

----------------------------------------

mysql> status
--------------
./mysql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.20, for pc-linux (i686)

Connection id: 1
Current database:
Current user: root@localhost
SSL: Not in use
Current pager: stdout
Using outfile: ''
Server version: 4.0.20-standard-log
Protocol version: 10
Connection: Localhost via UNIX socket
Client characterset: latin1
Server characterset: latin1
UNIX socket: /tmp/mysql.sock
Uptime: 1 min 39 sec

Threads: 1 Questions: 2 Slow queries: 0 Opens: 6 Flush tables: 1 Open tables: 0 Queries per second avg: 0.020
--------------

It says another socket.

I don't know, but maybe this is some crap left behind from the older mysql-installation, but i don't know where to change or what it even is.

Hope you can help me!
