Question Cannot trace file writing

Hello,

I tried to write some tar files to magnetic tape and i am using "tar command". When i give "tar -cvf /dev/st0 /home/*.tar" it just show the name of the file and nothing and i tried to check the contents of magnetic tape using "tar -tzf /dev/st0" it gave the following error
"gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"

please help me...

Drop the -z when trying to get the table of contents off the tape, it is looking for gziped contents. Tar will only show the filename when it writes it to tape. It may also write out a byte count when its done, but it's been a long time since I used a tape with tar.

If the -tf shows that the file is on the tape, try to extract it to a new directory with -xvf
