cannot startup pc linux os, can't connect to x serverS

Super new at linux, had a friend install PC Linux OS and KDE.

It was working fine for a week or so and then one day I turned my laptop on and the screen where you login usually comes up, it just showed linux fonts like MS-dos. It showed Login name and then password. I tried to do startkde but it couldnt connect to x server. So i tried to do startx and it said like couldnt find any displays, any ideas?

Are these the only error messages that you got? If not, post the entire thing. And, I do not think that you have Gnome installed. You may have only KDE. Are you not able to do startkde even as root?

Try reconfiguring your X server. You can do this by logging into the command line as root and running the command XFdrake. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file before running XFdrake.
