Cannot print in text mode nor in Xwindows

Hi.
I,ve had troubles printing in red hat 6.0.
I`ve read a couple of howtos but i cannot make it print.
I have got a HP 710c printer which works just fine under windows (so the problem`s not hardware).
First step:
cat a_file | > /dev/lp (silence)
cat a_file | > /dev/lp0 (silence)
lp1... and up are not configured.

Second step:
cat a_file | lpd (silence)

If I do a `lpq` command quickly after the `lpd` command i get a print job in progress which vaporizes with a second `lpq` command. ¿?.

I`ve tried configuring the printer under gnome with `printtool` with almost every printer that it showed me, but when I try to print a test page I get just ... silence. Am I a Ludwig?

Please, I wait for a suggestion. Thanks in advance and forgive my poor english. It`s not my native language.
And forgive even more my poor Linux knowledge.

did you recompile your kernel so it contains parallel (or usb or whatever u've got) printer support, and all the other support that is possibly needed for your printer. If not first recompile your kernel (linuxdoc.org if you dont know how). Then try cat file | /dev/lp0 or whereever your printer is on. Now your printer should respond but you will probably get weird output when printing from X so you should download APSfilter and install it, and configure it. RH probably has is already installed, and probably has some GUI tool for setting up the printer so the APSfilter step should not be necessary.
