Question Cannot detect firewire connected handycam, in Intrepid.

I am trying to set up a sony hdr-hc9 hdv 1080i for use in Stopmotion. My logytech cam is detected and works a dream. However I would like better quality and run at least in hd mode. I cannot get my camera detected in Stopmotion preference/video device. Here is what I tried so far:

sudo apt-get install dvgrab
sudo apt-get update

Don't know if it is installed, cant see it anywhere in Applications.
To check if firewire is installed;

sudo lsmod | grep 1394
ohci1394 37936 0
ieee1394 96324 2 sbp2,ohci1394

Meaning? None the wiser, I assumed yes?
To check that this camera is supported;

sudo apt-get install gscanbus
gscanbus
couldn't get handle: No such file or directory
This probably means that you don't have raw1394 support in the kernel or that you haven't loaded the raw1394 module.

What's next? Install “support”???
do I need permissions?

sudo chmod g+rw /dev/raw1394
chmod: cannot access `/dev/raw1394': No such file or directory

Ok, not installed?
I also downloaded Kino and checked in 'preference';
"The ieee 1394 subsystem module must be loaded, and you must have read and write access to /dev/raw1394"
So what's next (isn't installed by default in Intrepid?)....

Where I am going wrong?

Thumbs down one step forward and...

Discovered basic commands! I'm new....
cd;/configure; make; make install

./configure <dvdgrab directory>

but does not have 1394 driver as default, as the terminal pointed out. So;

./configure <'libraw1394-2.0.2' directory>
make
make install

back to dvdgrab and did likewise from the config. command
Still I have the same message showing;

checking for LIBAVC1394... configure: error: Package requirements (libavc1394 >= 0.5.1) were not met:

No package 'libavc1394' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you

installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables LIBAVC1394_CFLAGS

and LIBAVC1394_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.

See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I'm digging a bigger hole for myself as I do not quite understand how to use these commands, and I am not getting the results I want. What is next?
