Can I use the power button like in Windows?

When I want to finish of my session in WindowsME I set it up so that I just press the power button once to log out, terminate everything and turn the power off. Is there a setting in Linux so I can get it to act the same way when pressing the button? And how do I do that?

I am sure you could probably write a script or something maybe.. unlikely.. but whenever you shutdown linux, you always want to shutdown properly.. so you don't corrupt your filesystem.

If you recompile your kernel with APM bios support and select the option to 'APM BIOS calls power off' (or something like that), when you issue the shutdown command with the -h option you should be able to walk away and it'll power down for you after the shutdown process is complete
