Can hear microphone thru speakers, but won't capture

Hi there,

I just recently purchased a microphone for my computer.

I've tried several things and read several how-to's on how to get the microphone working, but unfortunately, the best I can get it to do is playback through the speaker. No method of capture (arecord, skype, cat /dev/dsp although I'm not 100% sure if the last one works) seems to be going through.

In my alsamixer, all of the controls on the capture view are at 100%. It appears that "Mic" is set as the capture device, because it says "L R CAPTURE" on top of it. In playback, Mic and Mic Boost are both on.

I have a SoundBlaster Live!.

I've read somewhere that a control called IGain was important for microphone capture. It is not present in my alsamixer, but it is in another mixer I downloaded called ermixer. Whenever I try to unmute it or set a volume on it, a split second later, it is returned to muted with 0 volume.

I dont have too much experience with Linux audio, but I can provide other information upon request... Please help me fix this... if I can't get it fixed, I'll need to go back to Windows (

how do you know it didn't work ?

how about trying audacity as a test to see if it will record

learn to use amixer (man amixer)

hm -- i dont know what distro you're in, or which wm you're using, but in my experience the kmix utility came with most distros -- try it, it has utilities to activate your mic and everything

in any case, good luck...
