Can't connect to ftp server with Fedora 16

Hello everyone, I'm new here, hope to be posting in the right place.
My problem is that I can't connect to a ftp server from the command line, I mean, if I write this in my terminal:

ftp ftp.xxx.xxx

the answer it gives me is:

ftp: ftp.xxx.xxx: Name or server unknown.

I use FC 16, been with Fedora since FC9 and never had problems connecting to ftp servers, and as I'm not an expert and I've been searching a lot online, I just don't know what it could be. Any idea? I would be very appreciated because I need it for work.
Sorry if the question is too fool and thanks.

try using the ip of the ftp server instead of the name. It looks like there is a resolution issue with dns. If you want to use the name then it either needs to be added to the internal dns you use or put in the /etc/hosts file.

Hello Kbscores, it worked!! thank you very much for your help. Just for learning a little bit more, I'd also like to know where in the /etc/hosts file I can add the ftp name, my hosts file looks like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

thanks again!

In /etc/hosts you'd just append a line to the bottom of the file like this:
Code:
192.168.54.32          myHostname       myfqdn.com

if all you need is ONLY one connection at a time ( and not 6 to 8 simultaneous connections )
then just type in the ftp address into the Gnome address bar
