Can't login into Linux Mandrake 2007

Hi everybody. I'm newbie and just today I installed Linux Mandriva 2007 on my IBM ThinkPad T20 laptop. Installation seems OK, but after installation when I rebooted PC I can't login. I just see black window wich requiring to login. OK, I was trying to login as root with password and I've got message that login incorrect or authentication failed. Same situation with user which hadn't any password. Then I typed the command passwd and I changed password for the user (not for root). And even after changed password I getting same error. Pleeease help me anybody!!!!! I'm really stuck!!

Erm, how were you able to run passwd if you could not login?

I'm not sure how Mandriva handles things, but it's possible that either or both of those accounts you mentioned are locked. Even setting password might not unlock the account, but root must use passwd with the appropriate option; check out
Code:
man passwd
to check out which option is the unlock option, and pass it as a parameter to passwd along with the account name, if you can log in and gain root privileges with su or something. If you can't, then boot into single user mode (add single to the boot line) where you are automatically logged in as root, and set the passwords and make sure the accounts are not locked. And after this remember to set a bootloader password, so that nobody else does the same trick

Thank You. Seems that during installation i didn't configured properly my graphics. That's why I can't see graphical user interface so now I have another problem. how solve that problem? should I upgrade Linux or there are any other way how to configure everything? maybe I'll need some graphic drivers for my IBM ThinkPad T20?
